This is another blockbuster with swathes of plum liqueur, blackberry pastille, vanilla and leather. Very chocolatey on the palate with tons of chewy tannins and dried fruit. This feels like a wine that will never quite shed its enormous body and weight. Impressive for what it is. A blend of 90 per cent carmenere and 10 per cent petit verdot. Drink in 2023.

The 2009 Tatay de Cristobal is composed of 90% Carmenere and 10% Petit Verdot aged for 21 months in new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it sports a brooding bouquet pain grille, pencil lead, dried herbs, lavender, blueberry, and blackberry. In the glass it reveals a voluptuous body, layered fruit, incipient complexity, and impeccable balance. This surprisingly elegant wine will benefit from 3-4 years of additional cellaring and deliver prime drinking from 2015 to 2024. Von Siebenthal's wines are produced entirely from estate-grown fruit.
