Every bit a port on the nose – raisins, figs, sweet raspberry syrup. Dry and charming on the palate with a menthol finish. (RH)

The 2005 Indigene is 55% Mataro and 45% Shiraz, the winery’s take on Bandol. Opaque purple-colored, the aromas include scorched earth, forest floor, wild game, blackberry, and blueberry. On the palate the wine’s youth is apparent. There are gobs of fruit and ripe tannin, great intensity and serious depth. Give it 5-7 years of cellaring and drink it through 2030. (55% mataro and 45% shiraz) Dark ruby. Smoky cherry and cassis aromas are complicated by cured tobacco, olive, black cardamom and a hint of camphor. Creamy dark berry flavors are sweetened by mocha and cinnamon and nicely framed by supple tannins, giving this serious sex appeal. Finishes on a spicy note, with excellent depth and thrust. More structured than the shiraz/viognier blend and in need of even more patience.
