Somewhat under most consumer’s radar is the 100% non-malolactic Sauvignon Blanc produced at Chateau Margaux. In some vintages, this beautiful offering can hit terrific heights of quality (i.e., 1999, 2001, and 2004). The 2003, which is not a great vintage for most dry white Bordeaux (because of the heat), is somewhat soft and flat. It reveals honeysuckle, pineapple, and more exotic fruit characteristics than the classic 2004.

Light with sweet, spicy oak on the nose. Very round and low in acidity. Michael Broadbent, with whom I tasted this, insisted it smelt of ping pong balls. Sauvignon greenness at the end. Simple sherbet flavours. Much less complex than usual. Creamy. Fine for early drinking, less well designed for the later period. (JR)
