Creamy and milky on the palate. All used oak. High acidity but rather lacking a bit of fruit. (RH)

Greenish straw. Minerals and real interest on the nose. Mouthfilling and refreshing. A very valid style. Just a little tight on the finish today but it should develop well. Comfy. (JR)
Here’s a new wine from one of New South Wales’s newer cool climate regions which grows fruit for the likes of Yattarna below and some other top Australian Chardonnays. This particular vintage is clearly made from cool climate fruit but seems to depend a little bit too heavily on lees stirring for its milky character. Its sweetness is also a little bit obvious but it’s definitely a departure from what some people still regard as stereotypical ‘big’ Australian Chardonnay. (JR)
The 2006 Chardonnay “Bin 311” was raised in older oak and went through malolactic fermentation. It exhibits an enticing aromatic array of mineral, green apple, and white peach. This is followed by a crisp, Chablis-like Chardonnay emphasizing pure, vibrant fruit. It is supple-textured and has a long, refreshing finish. Drink it over the next 3-4 years. Penfolds, arguably Australia’s most famous winery, continues to perform at a high level under the leadership of Head Winemaker, Peter Gago.
