Punteggio 93/100 · Da bere 2011-2020, Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate, Oct 2007

The 2005 Alexander Laing Old Vines Grenache was sourced from 100-year-old vines in the Greenock subregion of Barossa. Dark ruby-colored, it has a complex bouquet of damp earth, sage, smoked herbs, espresso, cassis, and kirsch. Velvety-textured with superb depth, it also has well-concealed tannins which will allow the wine to evolve for another 4-6 years. It has a pure, 45-second finish. This outstanding Grenache will drink well through 2020. The Colonial Estate is the Australian project of Englishman and Bordeaux chateau owner Jonathan Maltus. His 45 hectares in Saint-Emilion encompass Le Dome, Ch. Laforge, Clos Nardian, and Ch. Teyssier. His first vintage in Australia was 2002. Current production is up to 25,000 cases. Importer: USA Wine West, San Rafael, CA, Tel. (800) 485-5753 for John Larchet, The Australian Premium Wine Collection

Deep red. Vibrantly perfumed scents of red and dark berries complicated by fresh flowers, minerals and anise. The palate brings weighty, darker fruits, gently supported by supple tannins and brightening minerality. Finishes sweet and impressively long, with excellent grip and a subtle vanillin oak character.

Ruby-red. Intense floral and mineral tones on the nose, along with loads of fresh red berries and a hint of licorice. Boasts great concentration to the raspberry and red licorice flavors, with a brightening kick of juicy acidity building on the back end. This put on weight as it opened in the glass, showing a darker kirsch flavor and a suave note of oak spice. The chewy tannins say that this will need cellar time. From vines ranging between 80 and 100 years of age, according to proprietor Jonathan Maltus.
