Punteggio 87/100 · Da bere 2014-2022, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Nov 2014

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Clos de Vougeot from Bouchard Père has an open and generous bouquet with sous-bois-tinged red fruit that are vivacious and offer enticing “pinoté." The palate is well balanced with fine acidity and delineation, hints of strawberry cheesecake and raspberry leading to a relatively spicy finish that has good length. Coming back a second time, this does dispense some of its initial vigor and weight, so I would suggest drinking this Clos de Vougeot over the next 4-5 years and not longer.

14-18 months in oak, about 50-70% new. Mid cherry red. Delightfully scented with red cherry fruit. Delicate, fresh and harmonious. More length than power. Lightish structure but fresh. (JH)

(estate version; 13.8% natural alcohol): Bright dark red. Perfumed aromas of flowers, medicinal herbs, licorice and spices, with a suggestion of creme de cassis. Sweet, lush and very ripe, but showing less detail and energy today than the young Echezeaux. Finishes with round, sweet, very polished tannins and hints of chocolate and menthol. This wine includes a lower-than-normal percentage of juice from Bouchard's holding in the lower portion of the Clos as those vines were hit hard by coulure.

This is exceptionally toasty and the oak fights with the pungently earthy red berry fruit aromas. There is outstanding richness and volume to the extract rich big-bodied flavors that possess excellent power and obvious muscle, all wrapped in a dynamic and explosively long finish. Note that my score implicitly assumes that the wood will seamlessly integrate in time. Speaking of time, like the Le Corton, do not buy this unless you expressly intend to cellar it.
