Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2024-2032, Jeb Dunnuck, Apr 2024

A youthful Saint-Emilion, the 2005 Château Rol Valentin is ruby/plum hued with tight, reserved aromatics of darker cherries, leather, and dried herbs. Benefiting from air, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a ripe, rounded, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It’s clearly in its prime drinking window and should drink nicely over the coming 7-8 years.

A high scorer on release, at a point where this was still owned by former footballer Éric Prissette, before it was sold in 2009 to today's owners Alexandra and Nicolas Robin. One of the original band of garagiste wines, this is still showing the oak dominance that was there during En Primeur. It is confident, with a ton of impact but not a lot of nuance, majoring instead on liqourice, bitter black chocolate, spice, damson jam and black cherry fruit. Enjoyable, no need to wait any further to drink, but I definitely suggest a good few hours in a carafe.

The 2005 Rol Valentin is absolutely gorgeous. Inky, rich and opulent, the 2005 is supremely well done in this style. Moreover, it has aged impeccably. Blackberry jam, chocolate, mocha and sweet French oak are all kicked up to the maximum. Readers will find an unabashedly flamboyant, heady Saint-Émilion that delivers the goods and then some.

Punteggio 15.5/20 · Da bere 2017-2027, Jancis Robinson MW, Feb 2017

Tasted blind. Very dark crimson. Some sweet, coconut notes on the nose – the sort that put me off – but I’m sure the owners thought they were lavishing extra care on this wine that seems a little overdone, in the idiom of the immediate yesteryear in St-Émilion. Aggressive tannins. Hot finish. The half point is for effort. (JR)
