Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2025-2040, Neal Martin, Apr 2024

The 1989 La Tour Blanche offers light crème brûlée and yellow fruit aromas. It's not overly complex, but it is nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with toffee-ish notes. This is very tangy with a touch of Seville orange marmalade and what feels like a lot of residual sugar, although there is only 120 g/L. There's just a slight attenuation on the finish, but it continues to give pleasure. Tasted at the La Tour Blanche vertical at the château.

The 1989 La Tour Blanche is drinking well today, offering up aromas of honeysuckle, marmalade, preserved peaches and rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, it's fleshy and sensual, with a generous core of fruit, ripe but succulent acids and a long, perfumed finish. This has aged with grace.

Deepish gold. Complex honeyed richness on the nose, still with barley sugar notes, and bags of spice. Tastes somehow of gold – a sort of oily minerality through the heart of all those complex botrytis orange flavours. Some almond paste but really so hard to describe. Quince paste, sour and sweet all at once. Very long and incredibly complex. (JH)

Although loosely structured, the 1989 reveals plenty of intense, honeyed fruit in a rich, authoritative, full-bodied format. A big, powerhouse, sweet, heavy wine with a penetrating fragrance of honey and flowers, this generously endowed wine already drinks well, but can easily last for 15-20 years.
