Punteggio 92+/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2010

Good medium red. Reticent nose hints at medicinal cherry cough syrup and mocha, plus a whiff of dried flowers. Fat and savory but not particularly sweet; a tactile, dry, soil-inflected Bonnes-Mares with a plump middle, a strong smoky quality and no shortage of energy. The tannins are nicely ripe but this rather backward wine is still youthfully wound up.

(12.6% natural alcohol, vinified with 50% of its stems) Good deep red. Powerful, penetrating nose offers blueberry, white pepper, fresh herbs and rose petal. Intense and very pure but almost painfully unevolved today, communicating outstanding vibrancy to its flavors of dark berries, menthol and minerals. This very stylish and precise grand cru is a baby today but should be outstanding. Finishes with superb length and purity.

Nicolas Potel's négociant wine. 'No chaptalisation and no filtration therefore the most natural wines we've made for years. Some winemakers make a comparisons with 2003 – but there were more than 100 days between flowering and picking in 2007 and 2008. 2007 was less delicate than we thought; I was tempted to bottle in September but found the wines were not ready.' Distinctive aromas – spicy like ginger preserve but also ripe red fruit. Dry, fine-grained tannins and almost savoury on the finish. Very long. (JH)
