Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2018-2024, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 2001 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru does not have the same charm as the 2000 Bonnes-Mares at this stage. A little more disjointed with scents of blackberry, black tea and rooibos and later a subtle mandarin note. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and exerts a firm grip in the mouth, a common feature of Groffier’s wines in this era. There is just a little pepperiness towards the finish that, for me, just dries a little, hence my preference for the 2000 at the moment. Tasted at the Domaine.

Medium red. Aromas of plum and truffle are joined by musky wild notes and a balsamic quality on the rather soft nose. Supple and savory right now, with brown spice and earth notes dominating the middle palate. Finishes with substantial dusty tannins and noteworthy length and grip. Not a particularly fruity style but has energy. Nicolas Groffier ventured the opinion that this vintage "has stabilized since 2005" and wondered out loud whether the wine's touch of sweetness, which he said was not apparent earlier, comes from its alcohol.

The 2001 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a dense, almost opaque bouquet of raspberry, dark chocolate, smoke and tobacco scents; a little smudged at first but achieving more clarity as the wine opens in the glass. The palate is typical of Groffier’s style, with “thick” tannins rendering this Bonnes-Mares fat and voluminous in the mouth, but missing the requisite tension and the joie-de-vivre that I seek in this Grand Cru. It will continue to drink for the next decade, but I cannot see it rewarding continued cellaring. Drink now-2022. Tasted January 2014.

Light and a bit lean for a grand cru.  (JR)
