Punteggio 93/100 · Allen Meadows, Burghound, Jan 2007

Cool and reserved with restrained aromas of dark berry fruits, particularly blueberry with spice and earth undertones give way to rich, full and sweet flavors that are muscular and taut though there is currently a lovely suppleness to the mid-palate, which causes this to seem unduly forward yet the finish reminds one that we're drinking Bonnes Mares as it simply explodes with huge amounts of dry extract and solid minerality. This seems to positively drench the palate in extract of dark berries yet this is dry and serious with plenty of structure and this will need 12 to 15 years to really show what the underlying material is capable of. This could very well surprise to the upside as the vibrancy and balance are very impressive.

Punteggio 91-94/100 · Da bere 2003-2012, Pierre Rovani, Jun 1997

Medium-to-dark ruby colored, the spectacularly aromatic Bonnes Mares explodes out of the glass with spiced apples, dark cherries and cola scents. Chewy, powerful, polished and intensely structured, this full-bodied wine is packed with wild berries, plums and red fruits. Drink 2003-2012+. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.

Very dense black fruit aromas precede absolute huge| indeed even robust flavors underpinned by big but ripe tannins but they finish somewhat short. In sum| this is a curious wine as it's massive yet seems excessively structured and tight. Perhaps I'm missing the call on this one but I don't like the balance at the moment and the prospects do not appear promising that it will age out of this imbalance. If you own it| I would check in on it around 2005 and see how it's progressing. Allen Meadows, Burghound.com
