Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2018-2038, Neal Martin, Jul 2018

The 1990 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru boasts an ethereal and quite profound bouquet that shades the 1990 Clos Saint-Denis poured alongside. It bursts from the glass with red fruit laced with tobacco, mint and rose petal, all with captivating delineation and transparency. The palate offers a candied core of red fruit framed by filigree tannin. This is precise and almost symmetrical in terms of focus, blessed with a sappy, harmonious and quite opulent finish without detracting one iota of its terroir expression – a difficult feat to pull off. Magnificent. Tasted at Tour d’Argent restaurant in Paris.

The two wines from Domaine Dujac alone would have made for a magnificent evening. What a flight. The 1990 Bonnes Mares is flashy, ripe and totally seductive. The flavors are silky, racy and impeccably balanced. Today, the 1990 is firing on all cylinders, its obvious ripeness, very nicely balanced by bright acidity and plenty of structure. I much prefer the 1990 Bonnes Mares to the Clos la Roche, which I tasted a few weeks ago.

The flight of 1990s that followed was monumental. The 1990 Clos St. Denis showed great intensity and power in a seamless expression of fruit. At the same time, it was graceful and feminine relative to the other 1990s in this flight. What a gorgeous, utterly complete wine. The estate’s 1990 Bonnes-Mares revealed an additional layer of muscle and depth. Despite its richness, this was a wonderfully balanced, sublime Burgundy. The 1990 Clos de la Roche stole the show. It was gloriously ripe and opulent, with superb concentration and depth. All three of these 1990s were compelling for their richness and overall sense of harmony. Well-stored bottles have another decade of life ahead of them.
