Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2019-2030, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Apr 2019

Palish medium red with a hint of amber. Musky, slightly resiny scents of dark raspberry, spices, tar, tobacco, cedar and eucalyptus. The herb and resin notes carry through onto the palate, where they currently overshadow the wine's dark fruit and spice flavors. Fairly rich and thick in the middle, but cut off on the back end by rather rigid tannins. Boasts a strong spine but the acid/tannin balance is a bit sharp. Still, this wine finishes with very good spicy length and lift and comes across as younger than my bottle of the 1999. Incidentally, Brouin noted that he would not drink this wine quite yet, as he holds out the hope that it will soften with more time in bottle. (13.5% alcohol; 3.46 pH; 3.8 g/l acidity)

Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2005-2015, Pierre Rovani, Aug 1998

This deep-colored wine has a darker-scented nose than its sibling's, and reveals the same pepper and black fruit scents, yet does not have the herbal component. Very spicy, it is a thickly-textured, full-bodied, dense, and expansive wine redolent with a massive juniper berry, clove, cinnamon, meaty, wild game, brambleberry, mineral, stone, and cassis-liqueur-flavored core. This complex, tightly-wound, and firmly structured wine demands cellaring. Drink it between 2005 and 2015. Importer: Peter Weygandt, Weygandt-Metzler, Unionville, PA; tel. (610) 486-0800.

This is much like the magnum (see herein) but not quite as rich. Deep ruby red color with bright and beautifully pure raspberry and red pinot fruits all laced with a pronounced minerality and outstanding fruit/acid/tannin balance. The flavors are light to medium weight and while complex and elegant, they are more in line with a good premier cru rather than a grand cru. Still young, I would give this another few years in the cellar before attacking it in earnest. Allen Meadows, Burghound, Oct11,2003.
