Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2013-2018, Robert Parker, Aug 2013

The sensational 2009 Baron de Magana possesses a Bordeaux-like personality, particularly Pomerol, which is not surprising since the cuttings for the 35% Merlot in the blend were acquired from the Petrus vineyard! The remainder of the blend is 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Tempranillo and 10% Syrah planted in an old alluvial river bed with underpinnings of limestone. The wine was aged 14 months in 70% new oak prior to bottling. A stunning value, it boasts a dense ruby/purple color as well as abundant notes of sweet mulberries, white chocolate and black currant fruit, incense, vanillin, mocha and a hint of espresso. It is a complex, modern-styled, Spanish red offering loads of fruit, medium to full body, and terrific balance as well as purity. Consume it over the next 4-5 years, although I would not be surprised to see it last a lot longer. Long time readers of The Wine Advocate are familiar with the selections of Patrick Mata, one of the most driven, passionate and talented young men in the wine world. These are his newest releases, which should be in the marketplace this fall. He continues to expand his business and as the notes that follow indicate, he has now added a burgeoning selection of high quality, distinctive wines from Portugal. His portfolio actually includes three import companies, Ole, Peninsula and Obrigado. For more information on Patrick Mata, see Issue #202 (8-31-12). Punteggio 15.5/20 · Da bere 2011-2015, Jancis Robinson MW, Jul 2013

Merlot, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah from the Ribera Baja subregion. Obvious Cabernet character, with roasted pepper and green leaves, and some ripe blackberry underneath the pyrazine notes that give complexity. The palate is better than the nose with concentrated black fruits and high levels of density. Very good balance and less peppery mouth feel. (FC)

Punteggio 90/100 · Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Sep 2012

(35% merlot, 35% cabernet sauvignon, 20% tempranillo and 10% syrah, aged for 14 months in two- thirds new and one-third one-year-old French oak): Bright ruby. A highly perfumed nose displays raspberry, cherry, pungent herbs, rose and mocha. Fleshy and sweet but also sharply focused, with a suave floral quality to the flavors of red berries, candied cherry and vanilla. Lush and broad but lively, finishing with silky tannins and good floral persistence. (JR)
