As a demonstration of how some of Torbreck’s more modestly priced wines can age, Powell showed me older vintages of the Juveniles and Woodcutters Shiraz labels. Pale to medium garnet in color with a touch of brick at the rim, the 2002 Juveniles has an earthy, meaty, leather character over a good core of dried mulberries and kirsch. Medium to full-bodied with plenty of mature fruit and savory flavors, it has a medium level of chewy tannins and a refreshing burst of acid, finishing long and peppery. Drink it now.
