David Abreu’s 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch is a dark, exotic beauty. Mocha, espresso, plums, black cherries and incense meld together in a rich yet quintessentially mid-weight Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1994 was made by Ric Forman, but the style is a bit forced. There is little question Abreu (under the direction of Brad Grimes) and Forman are both making better and more convincing wines today. 92

The impressively rich, dense purple-colored 1994 Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Vineyard exhibits a blueberry/blackberry/cassis-scented nose, with a touch of violets and subtle new oak. In the mouth, the wine has disguised its tannic clout with extraordinary extraction of fruit, medium to full body, and a silky yet powerful personality. It is a 20-25 year wine that can be drunk now or cellared. The 1994, 1995 and 1996 possess fabulous purity and an undeniable sweet, rich, creme de cassis-like fruit character. David Abreu's mailing list should be a high priority for readers who love California Cabernet. Release date 10/98 Fax: (707) 963-5104.
