Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2012-2014, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Dec 2012

The 2005 Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve has ripe blackberry, iodine and mint on the nose that remains primal and one-dimensional. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline, tannic entry. I find this brutish and surly, and the finish is austere and saturnine. I think the oak (18 months in new French) has dried this out because it is overwhelmed by wood tannins. Drink now-2014. It was a pleasure to spend two or three hours in the company of Eduardo Chadwick at his estate and undertake verticals of his wines. Few have done more to promote Chilean wine than him, most notably with his blind comparisons with First Growth to demonstrate that Sena stands shoulder to shoulder with Old World icons. As you might guess, we had a long debate about that! But also, we engaged in a long discussion about viticulture and the philosophy behind his portfolio. Readers may remark on my relatively mean scores. I thought long and hard about this. But I firmly feel that recent vintages from Errazuriz completely outshine the older ones and speaking at length with winemaker Francisco Baettig, there is a sense of a winery changing tack and in my opinion, what this estate will produce in the next twenty years will completely surpass the previous twenty years. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Shiraz. pH 3.64, TA 5.42 g/l (tartaric acid), RS 2.43 g/l. 18 months in 100% new French barrels. Deep crimson. Very healthy looking. Slightly leafy on the nose. Very sweet start. Then green and sinewy as though there were some Carmenère in here! Perhaps it’s the greenness of Petit Verdot... Very dry finish (because of a tad too much oak?). Lots of polish and good intention. (JR)

Tasted blind. Just a touch of Cab Franc and Syrah but mainly Cab Sauvignon. A little paler than some. Very firm and focussed on the nose. Very sweet start. Lovely balance and quite gentle rather than kerpow. Non classic but very well made. Acid a little dominant on the finish though. (JR)

(90% cabernet sauvignon and the balance petit verdot, cabernet franc and shiraz) Bright ruby. Fresh redcurrant and cherry aromas are deepened by musky tobacco and mocha. Lively red berry flavors offer impressive clarity and gain a firm edge from dusty tannins. Sweetness builds through a long, sappy finish, which delivers a whiplash of bright cherry fruit. This will repay cellaring and may ultimately merit an even higher score.
