Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2019-2026, Neal Martin, Sep 2019

The 1989 Les Ormes de Pez is a vintage that I had not tasted since 2005. Now at 30 years, it represents a Saint-Estèphe that should not be overlooked. It has an attractive estuarine-scented bouquet, marshy and peaty aromas filtering through the ample black fruit. Smell that sea air! The well-defined palate offers black currant pastilles on the entry, veins of blue fruit and surprisingly supple tannins for what is usually a more structured, occasionally obdurate wine. Moderate in terms of length, it exerts a firm but not oppressive finish. This is perfect to drink now. Classic Saint-Estèphe. Tasted at the 1989 dinner at Hatched in London.

Rather drying out with a tarry finish. (JR)

The opulent and intense 1989 is full-bodied and softly tannic. It should provide robust drinking for at least a decade. Anticipated maturity: Now-2000.

Very, very closed, yet very, very impressive. Inky-colored. Gorgeous aromas of flowers, raspberries and black licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, yet reserved and very fine, with ultrasilky tannins and a long, long finish.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2002. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 1999.

The Cazes family – owners of Lynch-Bages – added this Saint-Estèphe Cru Bourgeois estate to their portfolio in 1940, just one year after they purchased Lynch-Bages. The property comprises 32 hectares of vines in the north of the appellation, close to the village of Pez.
