The 2000 Roc de Cambes is another vintage that I had not encountered for many moons. Give this a few rigorous swirls and it delivers wonderful, beautifully defined brambly red berry fruit, sous-bois , bay leaf, incense and veins of blood orange. The palate is smooth and harmonious, the richness counterbalanced by acidity, and it fans out gently toward the judiciously spiced and almost understated finish. This Roc de Cambes is drinking perfectly now and, judging by this bottle, entertains no thoughts of declining any time soon.

Warm days and cold nights. Says Mitjavile, 'It's stupid to explain beauty by this science of polyphenols. ... I don’t like the word austere. Wine is the kingdom of sophism – people using language to twist the truth.' Deep brick red. Back to the more mushroom, leathery character. But like the 1995, there's that note of lavender. Soft, chocolate-textured tannins with lovely freshness and so seductive. Chewy and deep and structured, much less exotic than some of the older vintages in this line up, beautifully built, and definitely not austere. (JH)
Fully mature, in fact, perhaps slightly past its peak, this wine displays plenty of chocolate, smoke, and coconut in a seductive style. As it sits in the glass, it begins to fade ever so slightly. This wine needs to be drunk up, although I suspect magnums of it would fully justify the outstanding rating I gave it seven years ago.
