This is also notably floral in character but with more obvious complexity and refinement to the cool and ultra-pure red and dark berry fruit aromas that evidence traces of earth and wood spice. There is superb intensity to the tension-filled, detailed and mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract on the notably firm, moderately austere and beautifully long finish. This should also reward longer-term cellaring but is sufficiently forward that it could be approached young as well. Tasted: Jan 15, 2014. Drink: 2021+

The 2011 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos Saint Jacques has a very refined bouquet that needs a little encouragement: blackberry, seaweed, gravel scents and a smear of boysenberry. The palate is medium-bodied with firm grippy tannins. There is still just a touch of hardness here, but the finish has a beguiling candied note that just enlivens the senses: hints of black plum and hoisin. This needs a decade in the cellar so that it can really show its stuff. Feb 2014, www.robertparker.com
