1971 Gevrey Chambertin Clos St Jacques

The 1971 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques has a well-defined, chlorophyll-tinged bouquet with traces of dried blood and what I scribbled down as "lido" (perhaps that faint chlorine odor.) The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced with that perfect seam of acidity. There remain vestiges of brambly red fruit–linear and tensile, not deep but effortlessly sophisticated with a brine-tinged ending. This fabulous Clos Saint Jacques is splendid after 43 years, and on this showing, could quite easily continue to give pleasure over the next decade.
