The 2012 Dalem is dark and inviting, with plenty of Merlot fruit and supple, round tannins. Black cherry, plum, mocha and cloves develop in the glass, adding nuance, even if the overall impression is of a wine built on texture. The finish is a touch firm today, so readers will want to give the 2012 a few more months in bottle. This gorgeous 2012 shows just how compelling and delicious the wines of Fronsac can be.

From one of my favorite properties owned by the Rullier family (now run by Brigitte Rullier), this blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc is a big-time winner in 2012. Inky ruby/purple to the rim, with beautifully sweet red and black fruits, some crushed rock and spring flowers, it is medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with no hard edges. This is an opulent, fleshy, top-flight Fronsac to drink over the next 10-15 years. Sleeper!
Inky cherry colour, purple rim. Inviting, savoury and dark on the nose. Cool, smooth and deeply fruited and the oak so well restrained. Deliciously balanced and fresh on the long finish. (JH)
