Note di degustazione
Hailed as a great vintage at the time, this continues to earn its stripes well into its third decade. The colour may be yielding at the rim, but the bouquet that rises from the glass is impressive to say the least with tobacco, menthol, hints of cherry and chocolate and raisin competing for attention. The palate is sapid and savoury with a thrilling compote of mushroom, dark cherry, sous-bois and mocha. Everything is in balance here from the fine thread of acidity to the evolved, integrated grape and wood tannins. The weight and texture are deliciously seductive and the wine ends with a long, salty-savoury finish. Fully mature, but should remain on this plateau for a few more years. Very complete and a joy to drink. 20 months in new Allier barriques and 8 months in large Slavonian casks.

The brilliant, young, still undeveloped 1,000 case cuvee of 1997 La Poja is fashioned from a six-acre vineyard situated at a high elevation. Combining power and finesse in a rich, concentrated style, it offers aromas and flavors of minerals, graphite, black currants, cherries, and subtle wood. This dense ruby/purple-colored effort unfolds by increments on the palate, always remaining noble, measured, and stylish. It will benefit from another 1-2 years of cellaring, and last for 14-15 years. A Leonardo Locascio Selection, Winebow, Hohokus, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620
