Last Tasted 6/92 Another superlative example of just how well Le Pin can be in an off vintage, this spicy, herb, and peppery-scented wine exhibits a medium-bodied, surprisingly rich, concentrated taste, lovely sweet, pure cassis flavors, and a soft, moderately alcoholic finish. Drink it over the next 3-4 years.

The 1980 Le Pin was served from one of four remaining bottles in Jacques Thienpont’s personal cellar in Etikhove. This exceeded expectations. Clear in hue, this Pomerol exhibits little color degradation considering the vintage. The bouquet has impressive definition with scents of faded blackberry, mint and cedar, which stylistically nudges it toward Pauillac. Returning after two hours, the bouquet blossoms with hints of jasmine and moldy Satsuma from grandma’s vase. The palate is medium- to light-bodied, with just a touch of greenness that merely lends it freshness and vitality, then a trace of cedar, mulberry and a dash of white pepper on the finish. This is unquestionably superior to the debut 1979 and 1980 Petrus. If you can find a bottle with impeccable provenance, you will be mighty surprised. Tasted from an ex-château bottle.
