Last Tasted 6/92 The huge nose of over-ripe bing cherries, herbs, smoke, and vanilla represents the tell-tale personality of Le Pin. The great sweetness and ripeness of fruit, the lavish, opulent texture, and the chewy, ripe, hedonistic finish result in a memorable tasting experience. This superb wine displays no signs of fading. It should last for another 7-10 years.

The maiden 1979 Le Pin is now extraordinarily rare. This bottle has a rather loose-knit and woody nose. The fruit has long faded. It's rather hollow and reflective of the so-so growing season and Jacques Thienpont’s acquisition from what was an unkempt vineyard back then. The palate is medium-bodied and angular with notes of sour cherry, light strawberry and touches of green bell pepper that lead to an attenuated finish. The 1979 is a fascinating wine of historical significance, but one now stripped down to its bare bones. Drink this now. Tasted at Bipin Desai’s Le Pin vertical in Los Angeles in November 2008, note taken from the Pomerol book by Neal Martin.
