Loads of spices emanate from the glass of the medium-bodied 2003 Vosne-Romanee Hautes Maizieres. Produced from a vineyard located below the premier cru Suchots, it reveals a broad, satin-textured attack as well as mid-palate, copious dark fruits, and a tannic, firm finish. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2012. Represented by Michael Stephens / Vins Divins, French fax: 011-33-3-80-24-06-26; www.divine-burgundy-wine.com; also imported by Martine’s Wines, Novato, CA; tel. (from deep, clay-rich soil beneath Les Suchots) Medium red. Reduced nose dominated by red fruits; less peppery than usual. Lush and rather powerful; offers a good combination of volume, weight and lift. Musky flavors of raspberry and strawberry. Finishes with fine tannins. Gives the impression of fresh acids and solid underlying spine, and yet I'd like to have seen a bit more precision of flavor.
Cask sample . Powerful menthol aroma. Deep and chewy. Round and fruity. Very gentle, but not very intense. A bit light on the finish. (JR)
