Punteggio 89/100 · Neal Martin, Feb 2026

The 1993 Clos de La Roche Grand Cru is a wine that I cannot recall tasting. I hold this in high regard chez Rousseau, though this did not seem to occupy the same ethereal arena as the Clos Saint-Jacques or Chambertin. I find it a little bretty on the nose, quite leathery and timeworn. The palate is medium-bodied with plenty of undergrowth notes that slightly obscure the fruit. This feels just a bit attenuated and austere on the finish. I wonder if there are better examples.

The Clos de la Roche is one of the few wines in the Rousseau portfolio that displays some of the vintage's tough, hard, astringent tannin, and shrill acid. There is good cherry fruit, medium body, and power and muscle to this more rustic-styled wine. It should drink well between 1998-2008. Baritone-voiced Charles Rousseau's 1993s are successful for the vintage, and softer than I expected given the inclination for the 1993s to be hard and tannic.
