Punteggio 88/100 · Da bere 2020-2027, Neal Martin, Jun 2020

The 2004 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, poured from magnum, has a disjointed and very stemmy bouquet that just feels raw and unappealing. The palate is slightly better, offering tart red fruit mixed with dark chocolate and brown spices, and some belated cohesion toward the finish befitting this Grand Cru, yet there is no doubt that Dujac has overseen far superior Clos de la Roche. Tasted at Sarah Marsh’s 2003/2004 tasting in London.

Magnum. Still youthful garnet with a pale rim. Juicy, lively nose. Super-charming palate entry of sweet, ripe fruit. A firm structure – no shortage of fine tannins in the background – but dominated by all that glorious fruit with grand cru weight but no heaviness. Hint of something sweet and nutty here, but nothing as facile as coconut. Long and energetic. Really rather magnificent. Bravo! How nice that we have a magnum to go at over lunch! Drinking dates given for a magnum. (JR)

Punteggio 18/20 · Da bere 2008-2017, Jancis Robinson MW, Sep 2007

Dark ruby with a pale rim, like all the 2004s. Light but satisfyingly autumnal nose. Very rich palate attack for a 2004 – bravo! Really resonates and reverberates. Quite tense and concentrated. A real testament to Grand Cru terroir. Rich and great zest. Already giving lots of pleasure. Long. Still evolving. Relatively racy for a Roche though none the worse for it. (JR)

Punteggio 18/20 · Da bere 2012-2022, Jancis Robinson MW, Aug 2007

Mid ruby. Exotic, orange peel aromas. Sweet start and very lively. Racy, jewelled. Lots of fine tannins. There is tightness and density here rather than sheer mass and alcohol (though the label says 13.5%). Rather sophisticated but not big. Very long. (JR)
