The 1999 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve Blanc from Château Rayas has a lucid straw hue. Scents of dried honey intermingling with tangerines, licorice, aniseed and desiccated orange peel form the complex nose. The palate is dense and weighty in the mouth – what you might call a “white wine with tannins.” Underpinned by a fine line of acidity, this has an almost Alsace-like sweetness, revealing dried pineapple and tangy clementines toward the slightly waxy-textured finish. Mercurial in the glass, it seems to change with every passing minute. A stupendous Rayas at the peak of its powers.

The 1999 Rayas Chateauneuf du Pape white is concentrated, with loads of glycerin as well as a citrusy/pineapple characteristic. When I asked Francoise Reynaud what she likes to eat with this wine, she said "I prefer it as an aperitif." Maybe that's its true calling in life. Complex, rather cool aromas of nuts, smoke, honey and mint. Dense and very intensely flavored, with subtle notes of citrus and exotic fruits enlivened by firm acidity. This is an excellent white Chateauneuf with unusual depth and delineation. Very suave and very long; balanced to age. A superb vintage for the rather rare white Rayas.
