2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc

The only way to convince consumers (and I count myself among this group) that white Châteauneufs can age is to pull out examples such as this. Clos des Papes's 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc is the greatest aged white CdP I've ever tried. There are some oily, terpene-like characters but also ripe, slightly honeyed pineapple notes in this round, medium to full-bodied wine that retains a great sense of freshness—even grapefruity citrus on the long, long finish. Also up front and perfumed, yet with a slightly more honeyed note in its buttered peach, creamy flowers, honeysuckle, and mineral-driven aromas, the 2009 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc is still beautifully fresh and clean on the palate, showing a full-bodied, rich texture, integrated acidity, and a classy, elegant mouth feel and finish. It can be enjoyed now, or cellared for another 4-5 years.

Vivid yellow. Intense aromas and flavors of candied citrus fruits, quince and honey, with a floral topnote. Juicy and precise, with very good energy to its orange, orchard fruit and chamomile flavors. Closes with impressive thrust and floral character. This wine ages extremely well, by the way. I have recently drunk some older bottles that were all in fantastic shape. The 2004 shows impressive depth and a waxy, honeyed character, with bitter pear skin and citrus pith flavors and a velvety texture. And the 2001 is a rich, velvety wine that offers deep poached pear, honey and spice aromas and flavors, and excellent finishing bite and length.
