Punteggio 94/100 · Neal Martin, Apr 2022

The 1934 Montrose has a diving bouquet with remnants of red fruit intermixed with loam and wild heather, which is very complex and absorbing in style. The palate is refined straight from the off with a brilliant line of acidity that keeps this Saint-Estèphe on its tippy-toes. It's cohesive with cranberry and light leathery notes towards the finish, where it does begin to taper. This is, nevertheless, a fabulous Montrose. Tasted at the Montrose vertical dinner organized in deepest Rutland in October 2016.

Tasted at the Montrose vertical in Stamford, the 1934 Montrose was a quite brilliant wine from the best vintage of that decade. Clear in color, it offered a beautifully defined, exquisite bouquet with vestiges of brambly red berry fruit, damp earth, wild heather and hawthorn, a complex and enticing bouquet that keeps drawing you in. The palate is medium-bodied and utterly refined, nigh on perfect acidity, perhaps not as detailed as the nose, but very focused and harmonious with cranberry and leather towards the finish. Sure, it just tapers in slightly, but that should not detract from a quite fabulous 1934 Bordeaux. Tasted May 2016.

This wine could give great pleasure, if drunk straight away. It is deep crimson and had a lovely perfume initially with the pronounced scent of violets. Lots of sweet fruit on the front palate but then a dry, austere finish in the end as the fruit fell away. Pretty impressive initially however. (JR)
