1990 Cotes de Nuits Villages

I am willing to wager that in a blind tasting against 90% of the premiers crus and grands crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, Robert Jayer's 1990 Cote de Nuits-Villages would easily rank in the top 10%. The saturated black/purple color has more in common with a top Bordeaux than Burgundy. The nose offers up intense black-cherry, herb, and sweet oaky aromas. In the mouth, this wine reveals super-richness, medium to full body, wonderful purity and clarity, and a long, soft, tannic finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. One of the stars of Burgundy, Robert Jayer has begun the decade of the nineties with what appear to be the finest wines he has ever made.
