One of the wines that caused me to fall in love with Chateauneuf du Pape on release, the Sabon’s 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin is still showing beautifully today. Currants, licorice, fruit cake and truffle all emerge from the glass, and it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, tons of sweet fruit and a great finish. I think its best drunk up, but it will hold for another 4-5 years for sure.

I’ve had numerous bottles of the 1998 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin over the past 5 or so years, and this was easily the best showing to date. From a cooler terroir in the northern part of the AOC, from mainly clay soils, the wine is still purple to the rim with decadent cassis and blackberry fruits intermixed with licorice, freshly snipped flowers, and touches of garrigue. The youthful impression carries over the finish as well, where it’s full bodied, beautifully balanced, textured, and long. While young, it’s far from unapproachable; however, given prior showing from my cellar, I still lead towards drinking these over the coming 4-6 years.
Mid red – gamey. Thick and sweet. Together! Slight medicinal but in this case at least the fruit matches the tannin. Hot finish but better than average. (JR)
