Punteggio 84/100 · Da bere 2021-2023, Neal Martin, Sep 2022

The 1991 Léoville-Poyferré is rather turbid in colour. You might describe the aromatics as half-decent, certainly above expectations with singed leather, freshly rolled tobacco and pencil shavings. Rusticity underlies this Saint-Julien, there is no getting away from that, a little lean and hampered by acute attenuation towards the finish. Fading, but the aromatics won't let go without a fight. Tasted at the vertical tasting with Didier Cuvelier in 2009.

A little cloudy with a broad brick rim. Initially sweet and meaty on the nose then more herbal. Firm but not dry. Still surprisingly juicy and fresh on the finish. (JH)

Leoville-Poyferre turned in a solidly made, muscular 1991 with good color, ripe fruit, plenty of tannin, and noticeable oak. The wine lacks charm and finesse, but should last for 12 or more years. It will benefit from 2-3 years of cellaring.
