Jackpot! Combines oak, dried fruit and mushroomy notes in the way that so few sweet wines bring together in such a perfect chorus. Thick, viscous, lengthy, complex – an absolute thing of wonder. (RH)

The 2008 Climens delivers 132g/L residual sugar. It has a much less expressive nose than the 2009: honey, wet wool, slightly petrolly in style. The palate is very well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, great depth and intensity, showing more clarity than the nose suggests. I would afford this another two or three years in bottle. Excellent. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022.
Tasted blind. Sweet and rich and burnished. Bit of alcohol and canned peaches on the end. (JR)
Herbal, exotic nose with a gorgeous overripe citrus fruit. There’s a real rotten-fruit aroma here – which in another context would seem insulting. Here it fits beautifully. Very aromatic floral finish. (RH)

Château Climens is one of Sauternes-Barsac’s leading producers of sweet wine. Classified as a Premier Cru or First Growth in 1855 it sits alongside just 10 other Premier Cru estates in Sauternes, only bettered by Ch. d’Yquem, which was granted its own elite classification of Premier Cru Supérieur.
