Punteggio 91/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2010

Medium red. Reticent aromas of redcurrant, minerals and smoke. Silky-sweet and lively but a bit reduced in the middle today. But solid minerality gives this wine a solid structure. The tannins are sweet and fine. (I scored the Gevrey-Chambertin Combe aux Moines 90 points in Issue 143, but would bump that rating to 90+?, as this tightly coiled, mineral-driven wine seemed higher pitched than it was last year and has the energy and precision to evolve positively in bottle. And I rated the Gevrey-Chambertin Cazetiers 91+? (compared to 92 last year) this time around. The wine shows some exotic white fruit notes to go with its aromas of raspberry, mocha, flowers and underbrush, and a spicy sex appeal that reminded me of Clos de Beze, but was tighter than last year and showing firm tannins, suggesting it should be forgotten for at least a few years.)
