Punteggio 89+/100 · Da bere 2019-2029, Neal Martin, May 2019

The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau 1er Cru demonstrates a little stemminess and greenness on the nose. I would have liked more fruit to counterbalance the stem addition here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and here the stems lend freshness and tension, particularly on the tensile, almost Morey-like finish that is endowed with good length. I would afford this a few more years in bottle to see if the aromatics can match the palate. I have had better bottles of this in the past. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.

The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny 1er La Combe D’Orveau is raised in 35% new oak. It has a pinched bouquet that opens nicely in the glass and offers attractive fresh strawberry, jasmine and undergrowth scents. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry. This is very nicely composed with fine tannins and well-integrated oak, building gently to a raspberry and wild strawberry finish. This is one of the domaine’s best 2011s. Drink 2014-2022. Taupenot-Merme was my final visit of the week. I have been following these wines for a number of years, even predating my wine writing career. Winemaker Romain Taupenot and his sister Virginie run the domaine in the centre of Morey-Saint-Denis and fashion a classical style of Burgundy wine that I feel has improved in recent years. Their 2011s are well-crafted and are mainly predesigned for early to mid-term consumption. Importers: Winebow, Montvale, NJ; tel. (201) 445-0620; Scott Paul Wines, Carlton, OR; tel. Rich and round and perfumed and very flattering. Long. Polished. A very successful vintage for this wine. (JR)

A pure, ripe and complex nose combines notes of red berry fruit liqueur, discreet spice elements and floral hints, all of which are set off by soft oak nuances. There is a very suave and textured mouth feel to the appealingly precise middle weight flavors that exude a lovely mineral element on the slightly saline-infused finish. A classic Chambolle.
