The 2005 Clos Marsalette is an absolutely joyous wine. Admittedly, I don’t have a chance to taste older vintages of Stephan von Neipperg’s Pessac-Léognan very often. What impresses me most about the 2005 is its freshness, energy and elegant, mid-weight personality. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, mint, cinnamon and dried rose petal are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite, classy red. Impressive.

From one of the properties of the Neipperg family, this beautifully fragrant, perfumed 2005 has a dense plum/purple color, a licorice-dominated, spicy, cedary nose, full body, and loads of fruit and depth. Great acidity and sweet tannin characterize this rich, over-achieving wine, which should drink well for another 15 or more years.
Deeply coloured, dark and spiced. Touch of eucalyptus in the ripeness. Then smooth chocolatey tannins and a firm, dry but fresh finish. (JH) One of 56 Pessac-Léognan reds that were tasted blind in London for Decanter magazine in July 2008.
