Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2014-2024, Robert Parker, Aug 2014

The first vintage overseen by the late Madame Pere-Verge, the 2003 Le Gay exhibits a full-bodied, masculine character with lots of mocha, roasted meat and black cherry notes, a dense, opulent richness, and a long finish. This still youthful, exuberant 2003 has a decade or more of life remaining. This is a revelation for a Pomerol 2003!

Punteggio 88/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2006

Red-ruby. Pungent aromas of toasted red fruits, tobacco, chocolate, smoked meat and sandalwood. Moderately sweet in the mouth, with notes of red berries, lead pencil and oak. Fairly successful for this difficult Pomerol vintage but could use more stuffing and nuance-not to mention primary fruit. Finishes with dusty tannins.

Punteggio 15/20 · Da bere 2007-2011, Jancis Robinson MW, Apr 2005

Healthy crimson but pretty oaky nose. Some mocha. Sweet start – almost American oak characters. Too much for me. Lacks the kick of freshness but would provide a big mouthful for early drinking. (JR)

Punteggio 87-90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2004

Red-ruby. Rich, ripe aromas of black raspberry, leather, chocolate, mocha and smoke. Suave on entry, then sweet but not overdone in the middle, with notes of black cherry, dark berries, cedar, leather and shoe polish. Doesn't have the stuffing of a top year, but boasts good vinosity and does not seem overextracted. Finishes with building, slightly dry tannins.

Chateau Le Gay

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
