Punteggio 94/100 · Jeb Dunnuck, May 2024

Fully mature and drinking beautifully, the 2001 Château Le Gay reveals a healthy plum hue with some lightening at the rim as well as a classic Pomerol nose of ripe black fruits, loamy earth, spice, truffle, and subtle dried flower notes. It's medium to full-bodied, has a round, lush, layered, absolutely weightless mouthfeel, and outstanding length. As with just about every 2001 out there, it's mature, and I see no need to delay gratification.

Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2021-2040, Neal Martin, Sep 2021

The 2001 Le Gay is a Pomerol that I disliked in its youth and assigned some scathing scores, but I must confess that it has blossomed in bottle and this showed well. It has a ferrous, slightly smoky bouquet with plenty of red berry fruit, cohesive and very nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and lightly spiced red berry fruit, turning ferrous with touches of tomato vine toward the peppery finish. Maturing with grace after a rocky youth, this should give another decade or two of drinking pleasure.

Punteggio 16/20 · Da bere 2008-2012, Jancis Robinson MW, Nov 2007

Mid ruby. Slightly overripe on the nose. Sweet and thick but pretty juicy. Tannins a bit dusty on the finish. Old regime. (JR)

Punteggio 16/20 · Da bere 2010-2017, Jancis Robinson MW, Jan 2006

Big and meaty on the nose. Ripe and inky. Sweet start but rather a lack of focus. Chewy, old meat-like on the palate. Very drying tannins on the finish. (JR)

Chateau Le Gay

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
