Rich and lively on the nose. A bit spiky and aggressive. Lots of acidity but good ripe fruit too. An interesting wine that goes to the limit – the take-no-prisoners style of Pomerol. Rather smudgy indistinct finish though. (JR)

One of the finest Le Gays of the last decade, this dark plum/purple-colored 1998 exhibits an earthy, truffle, smoke, iron, graphite, black cherry, and plum-scented bouquet. It is less rustic, with sweeter tannin than normal, fleshier, riper, more concentrated fruit, medium to full body, and a long, spicy finish. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2016.
Attractive berry, violet and cherry character. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a light, fruity finish. Rather lean. Slightly disappointing. Best after 2004. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 2001

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
