Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 1997-2007, Robert Parker, Apr 1996

Now that Le Gay has sold a ten-acre parcel of old vines to its neighbor, La Fleur-Petrus, it will be interesting to see how this wine's style might change. The 1994, which is showing better this year than it did last, is medium-bodied, with a deep, ruby/purple color, and some spicy oak, minerals, and black fruits in the nose. It is a beefy, muscular, tannic wine with sufficient fruit to balance out the structure. Give it 1-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following ten. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux.

Good deep color. Cherry, herbs, licorice and spice on the nose. Good velvety sweetness in the mouth. Fresh, slightly herbal flavors. There's still a slight medicinal toughness at the core, but this is a flavorful, more polished style of Le Gay, the first vinified by the Moueix-Berrouet team. Finishes with firm tannins and sneaky length.

Chateau Le Gay

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
