Lively rust colour but this has aged pretty fast to judge from the nose. Just a bit overripe and lacking refreshment. Bit of dry tarriness. Lack of luscious fruit in the middle but it’s a fun, mature wine. Just a bit drying on the end. More juice please! (JR)

Not the most expressive of the three Pomerol 1990s tasted in this range. A hint of purple in the crimson. Heady, potent nose with a hint of dried-fruit character but the finish is a bit sudden and graceless. Concentrated, yes, but overall a tad brutal – at this stage anyway. (JR)
Herbaceous, with not enough fruit depth or glycerin to balance out the rustic, astringent tannins, the 1990 Le Gay offers some pleasant black currant and cherry fruit, but it seems relatively young. It will probably become more attenuated with additional cellaring. Release price: ($400.00/case)
Closed and tight yet very concentrated, with muscular tannins. Dark ruby color. Cool stone, berry, cherry and mineral aromas. Full-bodied, with supersilky tannins and a long finish.--1990 Bordeaux retrospective. Best after 2005. 2,000 cases made. James Suckling,Wine Spectator 2000

There’s been lots of change at Ch. le Gay since the Parent family arrived in 2002 – with vineyards replanted, the cellars renovated and the winemaking adjusted. No surprise, perhaps, that quality is now higher than ever.
