Punteggio 97/100 · Da bere 2016-2031, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Mar 2016

The first vintage for the cuvee, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is a blockbuster that’s up with the top two to three wines of the vintage. Giving up terrific notes of blackberries, currants, bouquet garni, licorice and a kiss of barrique, this beauty is full-bodied, has stunning purity of fruit, sweet tannin, and an overall elegant feel that belies its underlying concentration and density. Made from 50% Grenache, 40% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah that spent 16 months in equal parts concrete tanks and smaller barrels, it’s a thrill ride of a drink today, but has another 10-15 years of overall longevity.

Ripe, suave and smooth, the 2006 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes possesses blockbuster aromatics of chocolate laced cassis and blackberry fruit intermixed with vanilla, earth and spice box notes. Fresh, pure and only showing hints of barrique, it’s full bodied in the mouth and has impeccable balance paired with a stunningly smooth texture, fantastic fruit and a long, clean finish. Drink this over the next 15+ years.

Bright ruby. Alluring aromas of framboise, cherry-vanilla, potpourri and smoky minerals. Completely stains the palate with sweet red and dark berry compote flavors sexed up by candied flowers and vanilla. For a wine with such flavor impact this is shockingly lithe, showing excellent finishing precision and persistence. And it's awfully seductive right now.

Dark crimson. Much more dangerous on the nose than the Origines. Very rich on the palate. Then dry light tannins. May well come right though for the moment not as convincing and integrated as the Origines. (JR)
