Just like in 2001, they finished harvest on September 28th in 2000. Seeing very little destemming and just about all Grenache (there's normally a splash of Syrah), the 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is more mature than the 2001 and offers classic notes of spice, tobacco, currants, fig and dried earth. Beautiful on the palate, with good purity and freshness, it is ready to go and I think best enjoyed over the coming 4-5 years, although I've no doubt well stored bottles will keep longer.

A brilliant example of old vine Grenache that’s drinking beautifully, the 2000 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes, as always, is a blend of roughly 95% tank aged Grenache that comes from three separate plots of old vines; Gallimardes, les Esquierons, and Charbonnières. It is an intensely perfumed, complex Châteauneuf that delivers copious amount of kirsch, dusty minerality, meat juice, licorice, and dried garriuge on the nose. Full-bodied and still structured and youthful on the palate, with gorgeous concentration, ripe tannin, and fantastic length, this brilliant wine might take a back seat to the ’06 and ’07, but is nevertheless, a thrilling drinking experience. This top-notch wine should continue to deliver the goods for a number of years to come.

The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes carries its 15% alcohol well. Though a compelling offering, and undoubtedly one of the wines of the vintage, it does not possess that magical extra dimension of greatness found in the 2001. Nevertheless, I would be thrilled to drink it anytime ... anywhere! The floral component of white flowers intermixed with melted licorice, blackberry liqueur, plums, and prunes is followed by an expansive, sexy, silky-textured, full-bodied Chateauneuf with great depth, purity, and lusciousness. As with its younger sibling, the finish lasts for nearly a minute. Again, it is a singular expression of Chateauneuf du Pape that is totally different than its peers. Strikingly rich, dense, and opulent, with a breathtaking array of complexity and flavors, its low acidity, ripe tannin, and wealth of glycerin suggest drinking it now and over the next 15-16 years.||Marcoux's Cuvee Vieilles Vignes is unquestionably one of the world's most profound wines. It has hit the magic 100 point score in 1989, 1990, and 1998, and probably will do so again in 2001. It is produced from 50-100 year old vines (primarily Grenache and the rest old Syrah and Mourvedre).||Sophie and Catherine must feel some responsibility for carrying on the heritage of the Armenier family, which has been making Chateauneuf du Pape for only 700 years!
