Punteggio 91-93/100 · Da bere 2016-2031, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Apr 2014

Lignier’s 2011 Morey St. Denis En la Rue de Vergy comes across as especially silky and refined in this vintage. Crushed flowers, sweet red fruit, crushed rocks are all layered together in a finely chiseled, pointed wine. High-toned floral notes add lift and energy on the finish. This is one of the most polished wines I have tasted from Virgile Lignier. Clean, saline-infused notes from the limestone-rich soils frame the fruit beautifully. The 2011 was done with 30% whole clusters.

Good full red. Aromas of red plum and redcurrant are accompanied by exotic suggestions of grapefruit and quince. Nicely balanced and energetic, with good mineral lift to the red berry and spice flavors. Smoothly tannic and persistent on the aftertaste. Virgile Lignier, who finds his 2011s a bit like the 2007s, told me that he began to cut back on his punchdowns with the 2011 vintage.

From Virgile's two hectares of vines, the 2011 Morey St. Denis En La Rue de Vergy has 20% whole cluster bunches. It offers a perfumed bouquet with dark cherries, bergamot and a touch of violet. The palate is soft and rounded with well-integrated oak. There is not a rough edge in sight here with a velvety, sensual finish that has great volume. Drink now-2020. This was my first visit to Domaine Lignier-Michelot, located on the eastern side of the RN47 in Morey Saint Denis. The winery itself is undergoing reconstruction with a new underground cellar on the way. Virgile Lignier-Michelot, the appended surname from his mother's side, guided me through the wines that displayed good volume for the vintage, packed full of fruit. Perhaps what the wines did not possess when compared to say Hubert Lignier, is that beguiling finesse and subtlety, but they are facets that can be fine-tuned. (30% vendange entier): Good bright deep red. Raspberry and a pungent mineral element on the nose. More flavorful than the old-vines Chambolle, offering notes of dark berries, bitter chocolate and mint complicated by a saline nuance. The supple finish features broad, lush tannins.
