The 1967 Ducru-Beaucaillou, which was served blind at an off-line tasting in London, came from a bottle direct from the estate's cellars. Deep in hue, it has a light nose with dark berry fruit, mortadella and bergamot tea scents, light but pretty. The palate has good weight in context of the vintage, quite sharp in terms of acidity, soft with some bitterness on the finish. This fragile Saint-Julien is on the downhill slope, though bottles with impeccable provenance might just have a surprise up their sleeve. Tasted in September, 2009.

For Ducru, the 1967 is a rather coarse, bland, obviously chaptalized wine, without the graceful fruit and spicy exuberance normally found in wines from this estate. Drink up. Anticipated maturity: Now-probably in serious decline. Last tasted, 10/78.
