The 2000 La Parde de Haut-Bailly is a blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, and it was the first vintage whereby some parcels hitherto used for the Grand Vin were blended into the Deuxième Vin to strengthen the quality. It has quite an intense bouquet with ample blackberry, boysenberry, freshly pressed flowers and a touch of melted tar. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy, quite grippy black fruit. I appreciate the freshness and vigor here, maybe a little angular toward the finish. There is a fine linearity and masculinity to this La Parde de Haut-Bailly, and it should drink well for another decade. Tasted March 2017.

Narrow, pale rim. Vigorous nose. Quite intense on the nose and still with a bit of tannin. Real grip and length. Some leafiness, some inkiness. Not opulent but very respectable. (JR)
