Punteggio 92/100 · Allen Meadows, Burghound, Oct 2004

Absolutely fantastic complexity with length that wouldn't quit. Clos St. Denis, with few exceptions, is rarely at the same level as the best examples of Clos de la Roche or Bonnes Mares but this is just flat out gorgeous with marvelous flavor precision. Not especially big or powerful but oozes class and elegance with beguilingly complex flavors and superb length. Wonderful juice and a great example of how good Clos St. Denis can be but so rarely is. This will require time to be at its best and be sure to give it at least 30 minutes to open as this bottle initially seemed to be on the lighter side but with air, the aromas and flavors deepened considerable and I was particularly impressed by how the richness improved dramatically over the course of 3 hours. This could be approached now but there is so much here that this will easily drink well over 20 years.

The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Clos St.-Denis (domaine) has a gorgeous nose of flowers, talc, red currants, and cherries. This juicy, medium-bodied wine is filled with raspberries, strawberries, red cherries, and flowers. It is pure, zesty, and impeccably balanced. Drink it over the next 10 years. Red-ruby. Aromas of red cherry and smoke. Supple and lush in the mouth; fleshier and deeper than Jadot Clos de la Roche. Lovely sweet red fruit flavors are perked up by a peppery element. Finishes with rich fruit and ripe tannins.
