Punteggio 86/100 · Da bere 2020-2022, Neal Martin, Mar 2020

The 1983 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru offers an attractive bouquet of dark berry fruit, cola, brown spices and a touch of bay leaf. Given the vintage, it continues to demonstrate fine definition, although it’s maybe just a little too savory for a Pinot Noir. The palate is medium-bodied with faded black fruit, and a little dusty and hard after 36 years, leading to a charming yet rustic finish. This needs to be drunk soon. Tasted at the Clos Saint-Denis vertical at Hide restaurant.

The Clos St.-Denis is Dujac's darkest-colored 1983. It has a rich, ripe, deep, fruity texture, medium to full body, and long finish. It is no secret that this estate did not have the success in 1983 that one might have expected. Jacques Seysses was apprehensive about the rampant rot in the vineyards and pulled the skins off the macerating grape juice very quickly in order to avoid the taste of rot in his wines.
